Responsible for providing safe transportation for children to and from their drop off points. Provide transportation for field trips, parent meetings, etc. and provide overall center support.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Establish bus routes and stops for embarking and disembarking.
- Inspect bus before each trip; responsible for D.O.T. Pre‐trip Checklist.
- Transport children to and from school in a safe and timely fashion.
- Inspect bus after each run to make sure no children are left on the bus.
- Follow all loading and unloading procedures.
- Maintain bus required documentation/paperwork such as the Bus Attendance, Bus Route Schedule, sign‐out sheets and pre‐trip inspections. Organize and send records bi‐weekly to Facilities/Vehicular Coordinator.
- Ensure Gasoline levels are monitored and consistently maintained.
- Keep accurate mileage records on gasoline receipts and pre‐trip inspection sheets.
- Keep accurate, current and legible records of emergency contacts with phone numbers on bus and at home. Responsible for contacting families whenever there is a change on the bus schedule.
- Provide transportation for field trips; plan route prior to trip and obtain bus parking information.
- Maintain PMI maintenance.
- Maintain consistent contact with the Aurora Central Office.
- Provide transportation for parents to parent meetings, conferences, seminars, and any additional agency activities.
- Know all children’s names.
- Maintain order on the bus; work with children and parents on good safety practices associated with bus operations. 1
- Responsible for securing correct number of bus monitors for each route.
- Facilitate and record monthly bus evacuations.
- Efficiently report all malfunctions of bus to Center Supervisor and the Facilities/Vehicular Coordinator in a timely manner.
- Pick up supplies as established by Center Supervisors.
- Distribute all correspondence to parents as directed by Center Supervisor (newsletters, health advisories, children’s artwork, etc.)
- Maintain a clean, organized bus; responsible for ensuring all required materials and equipment are on the bus at all times including but not limited to First Aid Kits and DCFS/Head Start required items.
- Provide center support by assisting with kitchen, cleaning, and office and classroom responsibilities as assigned. Participate in center maintenance as requested.
- Welcome and encourage volunteer involvement at the center; assist and guide volunteers to ensure efficiency. Encourage In‐Kind from parents and volunteers
- Responsible for helping maintain 85% A.D.A., recording reasons for absences, contacting parents, etc.
- Adhere to Head Start Performance Standards, DCFS Licensing Standards, and Two Rivers Head Start Agency Policies and Procedures.
- Perform any other assigned tasks relevant to the effective operation of the agency or assigned by supervisor.
Required Knowledge & Experience
- Valid Illinois CDL and School Bus Permit.
- Excellent driving record and experience in driving a School Bus and/or large vehicles.
- C.P.R. and First Aid Course completion preferred.
- Ten month employees must have the availability to substitute during the summer in KEYS programs as needed.
- Must pass all preliminary pre hire requirements including but not limited to DOT Drug Testing, DOT & DCFS Physical Certification and Criminal Background Clearances.
Essential Job Functions
- Must have sufficient strength and flexibility (ability to stoop, bend, twist, etc.) to frequently bend down to a child’s level, sit on the floor with the children, respond to a child’s quick and frequent movements and occasionally lift a child (30‐50 pounds). Must have ability to work in an environment with a high noise level and considerable activity.
- Physical demands ‐While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit for long periods of time; bend down to a child’s level, sit on the floor with the children, respond to a child’s quick and frequent movements, use hand to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move 30 to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close and distance vision.
